The Quran clearly tells us that Jinns and human beings have been given free will and the freedom to choose, whichever way they want to choose. Jinns are made of energy (fire to be specific).

Additional references from Quran about Satan and Jinns and their relationship with humanity are provided below:

  • Satan became a Jinn by disobeying God’s command [Quran 18:50]

Quran 18:50: "And [mention] when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,' and they prostrated, except for Iblis. He was/became jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange."

This verse clearly states that Iblis (Satan) was/became jinn, he was in the company of angels and his refusal to prostrate to Adam led to his fall.

  • Iblis's Refusal to Bow to Adam [Quran 7:11-12]

Quran 7:11-12: "We created you, then We shaped you, then We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,' and they prostrated, except for Iblis. He was not of those who prostrated.' He said, 'What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?' He said, 'I am better than he; You created me from fire and created him from clay.'"

These verses describe Iblis's refusal to bow to Adam, rooted in arrogance. His pride, based on his creation from fire, led to his rebellion.

  • Satan’s Ability to Mislead the Jinn [Quran 72:6]

Quran 72:6: "And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in jinn, so they increased them in error."

This verse highlights the influence Satan (and the jinn) can exert over humans. Some humans even sought refuge with jinn, which resulted in their increased misguidance.

  • Satan’s Role in Misleading the Jinn [Quran 6:112]

Quran 6:112: "And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy, the devils among mankind and jinn, inspiring to one another adorned speech in delusion. But if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and that which they invent."

This verse shows that Satan (and the devils from both mankind and the jinn) work together to deceive humanity, creating falsehoods and leading people astray.

  • Jinns and Their Disobedience [Quran 72:8-9]

Quran 72:8-9: "And we [the jinn] sought to reach the heaven, but we found it filled with stern guards and burning flames. And we used to sit in some of the positions to listen, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him."

This verse talks about the jinn’s ability to eavesdrop but after the decree of God, they were prevented from doing so. The rebellious jinn, including Iblis, seek to mislead humanity.

  • Jinn’s Nature and their Relation to Humans [Quran 55:15]

Quran 55:15: "And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire."

This verse explains the creation of the jinn from smokeless fire (a different material than humans, who were created from clay), illustrating their unique nature.

  • Jinn and Satan’s Deception [Quran 72:5]

Quran 72:5: "And they [jinn] thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone as a messenger."

This verse shows that the jinn, like humans, can fall into error and misguidance due to their association with Satan, who deceives into thinking that there would be no prophets or messenger sent.

  • Satan’s Influence Over the Jinn [Quran 15:27]

Quran 15:27: "And the jinn We created before from scorching fire."

This verse also refers to jinn's creation from scorching fire, and like Iblis (Satan),

  • Satan’s Pledge to Mislead Humans and Jinn [Quran 7:16-17; 114:4-6]

Quran 7:16-17: "He said, 'Because You have sent me astray, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful.'"

Quran 114:4-6: "from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws (when Allah’s name is pronounced), Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind - From among the jinn and mankind"

Satan’s pledge to mislead humans and jinn alike is described here. Satan plans to lead them astray from all sides, exploiting their weaknesses.

  • Jinn and Human Interaction [Quran 72:1-2]

Quran 72:1-2: "Say, 'It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened [to the Quran], and they said, 'Indeed, we have heard a marvelous Quran.' It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it; and we will never associate with our Lord anyone.'"

This passage indicates that jinn listened to the Quran and responded positively by believing in it, rejecting Satan’s influence and the misguidance he had caused them to follow.

  • Jinn’s Free Will [Quran 72:11]

Quran 72:11: "And among us [jinn] those who are righteous, some are on the contrary, we are of differing ways."

The jinn, like humans, have free will, enabling them to choose between righteousness and wickedness, with Satan exemplifying the latter.

  • Satan and His Descendants [Quran 18:50]

Quran 18:50: "...Will you then take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you?"

The above verse indicates that Satan has descendants among the jinn who align with his rebellious and deceptive nature.
